'Codes and Conventions of Reality TV'








Reality TV has many codes and conventions which are used together collaboratively in order to create a good quality reality TV show. Typically, these shows include real people rather than actors, this gives the viewers an opportunity to observe each person and follow how they live and behave within day to day life. Real people are used to create an image of what they are like in real life, although this representation is often hindered by the producers of the show due to them guiding people on how to act on the programme and therefore showing a hidden picture of what they are truly like. Characters either conform or challenge the traditional stereotypes seen in reality TV programmes. Although this is commonly the case, reality TV is usually filmed within a real situation/setting (although set up by the makers of the programme) and is largely unscripted - this allows for the unpredictable.








In the reality TV production 'Educating Yorkshire', the programme represents both teachers and students. The Mise-en-scene of the programme is a school. The representation of the teachers and students are very different as the advert focusses on the negativity of the students and how they lack motivation to do well and shows them not focussing on their work but messing around and not taking school seriously.
